The National Parks of Central and Northern India are the best places to see the Sambar Deer, possibly the favourite prey of the Bengal Tiger given their large size in comparison to other deer species. Unlike their cousins in the Southern National Parks, these Sambar Deer are not shy at all and will stand their ground when approached by tourist jeeps. They are also the most reliable when it comes to alarm calls. If you hear the Sambar Deer alarm call in the Indian wilderness you can be rest assured there’s a Tiger or Leopard closely. In fact if you read through my various posts, you would be surprised at the huge number of posts where we heard Sambar Deer alarm calls first and then spotted a Tiger or Leopard very shortly. Here are a few pictures of this magnificent predator spotter.
