Giant Wood Spiders are one of the largest species of spiders found in India. We were fortunate to spot two sub-species in the Jungle Lodges camp in BR Hills. Incidentally both of them were Female Wood Spiders. And had a huge web spanning 2-3 meters in diameter, which they were constantly repairing. Once before we had spotted the tiny male Wood Spider along with the female in Thattekad, Kerala.
You can read our earlier post on the other Wood Spider here. This Spider was very engrossed in the act of repairing its web. And it was an quite an experience to watch this craftswoman skillfully use her hind digits to guide the sticky secretion from her abdomen to weave the web. The fact that we were photographing using a 300mm f2.8 with 2x convertor gave us the opportunity to single out the master craftswoman in full frame compositions.
